I can only really share my experiences with Lindy, Balboa and Tango. If you are self-conscious about your sense of rhythm then get your teacher to recommend some songs/artists and find them on spotify. Start by tapping along on every beat while you're brushing your teeth or something. Then make sure you can find the first beat of every bar. Then the last. Once you are confident with that, practice your basic footwork patterns. Make sure that you can move around comfortably (forwards, backwards and around in circles) without messing up the basic footwork. Once you have done that for one song, move on to the next.

For bonus points, try tying a scarf around your ankles to see how small you can make your footwork without losing the feeling of rhythm in your body. Also, try listening out for places in the music that say "STOP" and freeze where you are for 8 counts or so. Make sure that you can start again at the start of the following bar.

All of these exercises will make your dancing more fluid and help you to recover when you make mistakes (which is inevitable when you are learning new moves). I think of learning moves as a way to test your mastery of the underlying principles. If you learn moves quickly then it is a sign that you have mastered the foundations. Keep in mind point 1.2.1 though and don't get too obsessed with doing lots of new moves all the time. Keep it simple, do it well, and be playful with it.

thanks this was very helpful. i was kind of looking for general rule of thump stuff about learning any dance, for a complete novice with limited natural rhythm and not a good memory for moves. I am thinking things like:...practice every day for such and such time... jump rope for leg strength... write down and repeat moves or do moves without music!
These are just general made up pointers to exemplify what am looking for. Its general crap that helps a person learn and enjoy dancing that am looking for. Can you help please :-(

Sorry for not replying. I should probably have warned you about the changes I was making.

I took the service down over the weekend and on Monday while I was working out a fix for your problem. I believe I have found a solution (If you are not subscribed to the echobot when it signs in, it will remove you). I tested it using my other (low-traffic) echobot account in an attempt to reduce the amount of spam that you received, but there was no way to disable that one last subscription request (when the echo bot signed on and retrieved its contact list to check who it needed to remove without taking the entire server off the network. There may possibly have been a second, because the bot crashed when I tried to unsubscribe from so many contacts at the same time and I had to try again in batches.

I will ask the XMPP server sysadmin to make sure you are no longer being spammed, but you are no longer on the echobot's contact list, so if you are still being spammed (apart from on Monday night) then I'm gonna blame prosody. I also plan to double-check that h.264 video calls work with Google Talk, and then bring it up and blog about it again. This should happen by the end of the week.

Yup, still getting the contact requests. Not 20-30 at once as a few hours ago, but one every few minutes.

What I don't understand is - I don't even know that echo address or use it. I run my own jabber server. I have no clue why your system should contact me at all.

We have just moved our xmpp server over to prosody (ejabberd wasn't able to cope with the echobot's roster size), so the echo bot is back online again. There is a peculiarity in how some clients/servers deal with the publish/subscribe lists that I still haven't figured out an elegant solution to. I've temporarily disabled an old hack, so you shouldn't get any more contact requests from us (but some clients may fail to become properly subscribed). If you get any more subscription spam from the echobot, please comment on here again and I'll look into it further.

@Blaise: I've noticed a few of these annoyances that you speak of:

The most pointless diferences that I've found are the UTF vs utf at the top of the file, and the timestamps at the bottom. I think that the solution to these problems would be to write a git filter (smudge and clean ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/gitattributes.html) to ignore these changes.

There is also a crazy bug where one of my notes is not visible in Conboy, but still exists in Tomboy and on the filesystem. Any ideas what might be causing that?

@Sandy: I also noticed that the tomboy Note Directory Watcher causes changes to be written to the working directory in the middle of a rebase (which breaks *everything*) so I decided to do ignore performance the merge in a temporary directory.

@Blaise: @Sandy: If you have any other hints that might be useful in helping me to write a git filter, please tell me. It will probably take me a few weeks to get around to it, so no rush (git mergetool seems to be pretty easy to use now that I've resigned myself to using a tmpdir, so I don't have much motivation to fix it properly).
